The knockdown texture is often found in the ceilings and the interior surfaces of homes.  Some of the benefits of applying plaster to the wall include creating a visual appeal, hiding the flaws on your drywall, and creating a sound barrier. There are different names for the knockdown texture depending on where you reside in the United States. After applying the knockdown texture on your ceilings or the walls of your home, it is very hard to remove the plaster. There are different types of knockdown textures and each of them has its pros and cons. It is good to have all this information at your fingertips to determine which one will work best for you.

The first one is the sprayed knockdown technique. In this case, the professionals mix a joint compound with water and then adds it to the surface of the wall or ceiling. You have to spray this material on the surface of your wall or ceiling. After the application, use a plastic or metal trowel in knocking down any high regions of the texture. Allow the finish to dry for approximately 24 hours before you can apply your preferred paint. If you are applying the knockdown texture to your ceiling, only apply flat paint on the texture. Painting with any sheen levels that are applied to your ceiling may cause glare and draw attention from the ceiling.

The next one is the hand-applied knockdown texture which is a unique application process. You still use the joint compound but roll the plaster in various directions. The roller will create a texture that has several huge peaks that stand up from your surface. Using a trowel, the artisan will knock down these peaks. You can either move the trowel in horizontal and vertical sections.

The other knockdown application is the crow’s feet texture. You only apply this technique to the ceiling. The other name for this finish is the ‘slap brush technique.’ You can either hand apply or spray the plaster on the ceiling. You have to stamp plaster tools like a plastic trash bag and a large paintbrush into the wet joint compound. Use the drywall trowel to knock down any peaks.
